A PUBLIC MEETINO

I A meeting convened by the Mayor I (Mr A. Sheat) wa*: held in' the Institute at Richmond, on Thursday evening, to discuss ways and means of locally assisting the China Famine Relief Fund. Several people were present, ancl all entered very heartily into consideration of : the finest ion. | The .Sia vor slated that very acute dis- ] tress had been occasioned in China lately by natural cau.es over which the people of that country had uo control, 'and that millions of them in consequence [ had been smitten with famine. He contended that on the grounds of humanity and Christianity help ought to be sent to those so wofully afflicted. The question was as to the nature of the effort that should be made. After some of those present had expressed their entire : vmpatby with the movement, and subsequent discussion, it was unanimously agreed that Richmond and neighborhood should be canvassed for subscriptions. The names of jMis cs Hart, Holdaway, aud Fittall, and cf Mesdames Hunter, and Peryman, were enrolled as canvassers together with ethers whose consent to act is to bc asked.
