MARINE CASUALTIES.
THE NORTHERN CHIEF IN A GALE. THE MISHAP TO THE PORT CHALMERS. [United Press Association. — Copyejoht.] (Received May 8, 10.27 a.m.) • SYDNEY, Wednesday. The Northern Chief encountered a severe gale on the voyage. The cabin was destroyed, the navigating implements were demolished, and the rails were broken. Owing to a large quantity of water having reached the hold .it was necesary to resort to pumping for a time. The second mate, Mr MacFlower, had a narrow escape during the gale. He was washed overboard, but was rescued. ADELAIDE, Wednesday. At the Marine Board inquiry into the accident to the Port Chalmers, which struck the wrecks in the harbour, the captain stated that he did not think the provisions made to guard against vesels colliding with tho wrecks were sufficient. The Board cautioned the master of the Port Chalmers to be more careful in future. The steamer has been temporarily repaired. THE FIRE ON THE MOKOIA . DUNEDIN, Weanes. It has been decided to sell 250 bales of tow and flax damaged in the Mokoia's fire. Outside this loss the damago to other cargo by water is estimated not to exceed £100.
