SUDDEN DEATH OF MR ALFRED CARTER.

COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS AT NELSON. The community, especially the business portion of it, will be greatly shocked on learning that Mr Alfre 1 Carter, Collector of Customs at Nelson, died suddenly in his office at the Custom House this afternoon. Shortly after 1 p.m. Mr Mclntosh, a clerk in the office, heard a sound &3 of something falling in Mr Carter's room, artd on investigating saw Mr Carter lying on the floor, having fallen with the chair on which he was sitting. Dr. Andrew was immediately - summoned, and on arrival found that Mr Carter had had a stroke of paralysis. Ceretral hemorrhage had set in, and all that the dector could do was to nwait tha end. Dr. Lucas arrived soon after Dr. Andrew. Mr "Carter lived less than a quarter of an hour after the seizure, breathing his last at 1.20 p.m. Mr Carter was a married man, and to the widow and two daughters of the family the deepest sympathy will go out in the sudden loss of husband and father. It is learnt that Mr Carter had not been in the best of health, though he was able to attend to his duties. An inquest will not be held, as a certificate of death will be given. Mr Carter was appointed Collector of Customs at Nelson in December last, so that his residence here had been a short one. He was on relief duty in Nelsoi- on a former occasion. Though the period of his residence had been so short he had become a very popular officer. Prior to being promoted to the chief Customs position in Nelson Mr Carter was stationed in Christchurch.
