' The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the" following cable from the High Commissioner, . dated 13th inst. : — > Ti.i mutton market is quiet with a I slightly better demand at reduced prices. The average price of Canterbury mutton is 3Jd; North Island 3gd; ■ Australian 3id River Plate 3gd. There '■■ is good demand for all lamb and a i ! better tone was experienced this week. ; Supplies fall short of dsmand so far as - light weights are concerned, which ■ average s£d ; Canterbury heavy weights I are quoted at s|d, and 5d is asked for similar weights in other than Canterbury brands. There is better demand for beef owing to short supplies. Chilled shipments of New Zealand beef are quoted at 3id and 2§d for hind and 1 fore quarters respectively. The butter market is dul, buyers ! holding back, expecting price; to low- " er. Some holders are forcing sales, there j being heavy supplies on hand. Choice : New Zealand is quoted at 98s ; Austra- • lian 955; Danish 105s. Supplies are s increasing from Siberia, and butter ' from that country is quoted at 91s. The cheese market is quiet, with a i tendency in favour of buyers, but good • business is done at 635. ■ The hemp market is dull, only poor ! business being dofle.
