THE MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY.
A VISITOR'S OBSERVATIONS. THE WORK WELL FORWARD. A REPLY TO A CHRISTCHURCH CRITICISM. [United Pbess Association.] WANGANUI, Wednesday. * Mr Bignell, ex-Mayor of "Wanganui,' and an experienced contractor, has ■jnst returned from a visit, to Auckland, via the Main Trnnk Railway. He ridicules the statement recently made by a Christchurch resident that the line will take three years to complete. Mr Bignell is confident that communication will Ce opened at the end of next year, and the was assured by the contractors for the Makafcote viaduct (which he says is the key to the position), that it wil be completed by Christmas, by which time the railhead will have reached there. - The work for another two small viaducts is also well in hand, and more than half of the 30 miles between the railheads is already joined and ready for the rails^ while big cuttings in 'other portions are well in hand.
