Cricketers will be pleased to learn that the grass in Trafalgar Park is to be cut at once, the City Council last night having instructed the City Surveyor to have the work done forthwith.
The City Council last evening granted an application from M- Flett for a plumber's license.
A Christmas Service will be held at St. John's Church on Christmas Night, . when Miss Stevens will give ria Organ T«cital, and suitable music will lie rendered by the members of St. John's-phior.
An excursion to the Croixelles on Boxing Day will be made by the steamer Tasman. The opportunities of visiting this beautiful Sound have been so rare lately that "no doubt a large number will take -advantage of the present one. The afternoqn will be spent at Okiwi Bay: which is acknowledged to be one of the. prettiest places for native bush to be found n&ti Nelson. Messrs Field Bros-Vwill accompany the steamer and have granted permission for excursionists to visit the bush, etc. Tickets are now obtainable from Messrs Wilkins and Field. .-
It is notified that owing to the prevalence of dry weather the use of the hose is prohibited for the present in the Borough of Richmond. It is explained that no. shortness of water for domestic purposes is apprehended, but that the supply will not stand the lavish use made of it for gardens and orchards, and feven on farms.
Mrs W. Miller, wife of Mr W. Miller, sonr/, bricklayer, Bridge-street, died s »dJenlvthis morning. 'Jhe dereascd had been a sufferer on and oft for the past eight or nine years, and a fortnight ago had another bad turn. She was taken to bed yesterday evening about 6 o'clock, and was visited frequently by her daughters up to 1 a.m. At 4 30 this morning a daughter again went to the deceased's room and found her mother dead. - Dr. Ban- has given a certificate Itai death was due to natural causes, and no inquest will consequently be held. The family have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends m their sudden bereavement.

The distribution of prizes in connection with the Richmond State School took place in the Oddfellows' Hall last evening in the presence of a large assemblage of parents and friends. Mr A. T. Maginnity, chairman of the Education Board, presided. During the evening the pupils sang a number of , songs very creditably.

In connection with the Christmas cordials, etc., sent to this office by Messrs J. R. Dodson and Sons, it should be mentioned that two new summer drinks —cream soda and orange juice (hampagne—were found very refreshing, especially during the recent hot weather.
It is learnt that men will be put on the Turnbull lease at Parapara within a week or two. Messrs Wayne and Jones, of Sydney, who have become interested in the development of the iron ore deposits, have ordered special machinery from England and America for iron works at Parapara. This machinery will, it is stated, bp of the finest and most up-to-date description. The men who are shortly to be put on the lease will be engaged in preparing for the tramway *wd wharf, the former ot which will be about two miles in length. Lines will have first to be laid out for the tramway, and this work will be proceeded with first of all.
