Cr McMahon a3ked if the County gets anything for the use of the •' monkey " from the Government ? He said bolts ' were being lost, and no attention was , being paid to the machine. j The Engineer thought a small charge i should be made. Cr McMahon drew attention to a dangerous crossing on the railway line near the School, Motueka V&Ley, and he moved that the Engineer see the District Engineer in the matter. Cr Bullet thought the Council had a good claim against the Government with regard to the section of the road at Tadmor, 10 miles of roa 1 having been spoilt by the line. All that could be done was to represent the matter to the Minister of Railways, as Mr Shaiu had no power in the matter. Cr Maomahon though* that Mr Shain could make the repairs. Cr Kollet thought that the only thing that could bo done to i/uprove matters was for tho Government to provide a properly formed and fenced road, and Mr Shain had no power to act in the matter. It was a mattec of several hundred pouuds to make a proper road, not a few dribbles of gravel. The rails had encroached on the formation. He moved that an appeal to the Minister of Railways be made for a properly formed road along tbe railway for 10 miles. Cr Everettt thought Cr Macmahon's j and Cr Rollet's resolutions clashed { against < aoh other. Cr Macmahon said Cr Eollet wont too i far. The railway was a great benefit, oven if a portion of the road had to be spoilt. Cr Best thought it rather early to ap- ' peal to the Minister with regard to the far end of the road, and yet deal with the District Engineer with regard to the nearer section Cr Kuliet said that both Mr McKenzie and Mr lirahaiu, M.'sll.tt., had reconi* ineDdbd g'-»in>'; to tlie Government. Ultimately an amendment that the matter bu referred to the District Engi* neer wau lost, and tho motion to appeal to the Minister was carried. j Cr. Evurott brought forward vari.ou« minor matters that needed attention iu I his district, including a nuiaance from blackberries overgrowing the road, which was ordered to be dealt with. Cr ttverett suggested that the timo f -v deputations should be stated on the orueipaper. j I'he Chairman agreed that there should be a fixed time, as deputations now came in at a moment's notice.

The Chairman reported that he had attended the County Counciia Conference at which very good work (**a.s done He ha4 Supported all measures brought forward which ho considered of use, and he hoped the Gworaiijeuifc would give effect to the recommendations niado i>v i!i« Conference. He enumerated in detail tho proceedings of the Conference, especially as aliecl}*Ng this district in particular, and County interests in general. He said the Conference had refused to urge tho substitution of the prc7^*'wk>n'• ui tlie Public Works Act of L6H2 for tlio Noxious Weeds Act, as tno lattor was a- step in the right direction in spite of incidental harUships. The Conference Jiad agreed to ask that a proportion of tlio royalties dn the salo of flax and tim'i ■«• be paid to County Cowacila. The Goute .« ence seemed to have carried jiuything tlio Government favoured. With 20 other delegates, ho had had seen a new stone cruShgr at work, and had found it an efficient ap^ar'atas, which the Council should purchase if it had tbe means. Wilh regard to the Noxious Weeds A.ct Cr Gill asked if the Council was bound to giye notice to clear weeds from a road or could itself take action P Th* Chaimau said the matter was in the hands Of tlie Stock Department. Or Hacmahon thought the Council had full power to ignore tho Act, and under the Public Works 4.ct incur the expeuso of clearing weeds fiom a road without compelling settlors to do so. On the motion of Cr Frauklyn, seconded by Cr Best, a vote of thanks to Cr Deuke for attending the Conference was unanimously passed, and the sum of £ti waß allotted for expt>nFus, ft wns resolved on tlie motion of Cr "teVerWfct; ifficottded by Cr GilJ, that iu future the Cottno'il pay exchange on all cheques in the Motueka Hiding. Cr Macniahoa suggested that tho Council should have a bank account at Motueka. The Chairman said the Council might adopt the Bank's suggestion that a running account be kept at Nelson and at MoCuekft. It was decided to t&iiviiiiie Jla'nO'J s— ehango as at present. Cr Holllit gate notice of motion to to--Bfcihd a pretiHMß resolution' ne'gntiring the purchase o'f a stonoSitishary aud to uidve that one bo purchased. Cl* Hollet drew utuention to the fact that a po'rtibn of his former resolution that Mr itnapfj overseer; should report direct to the Council had Cot tyjen carried out." Tho JiugiueLf said it would not bo fair to him rlu'it a subordinate officer should repbrf; <inect to tho Council, especially as he (Kir feittle'ohh) . was practicallj "responsible for tho wliole district; «H,aoug Mr Knapp had a port. on of the district to oversee. Cr Macmahon said that, though democratic, he was a stickler for respecting the susceptiDilities ot their officers. The ' resolution had been carried out in spirit , if not in tho exa-jt letter— tho good had j been picked out of it.
