NELSON COLLEGE.
MILITARY AND ATHLETIC EXHIBITION. The military and athletic exhibition given hv the pupils of Nelson College on Saturday afternoon iuth« College frround was -cry successful, and largelyattended, notwithstanding that the weather was threatening. The programme opened with a military maze, in which 96 boys took Dart. Tbe Cadets gave tho general ealnte, formed into line, and then went thronzh a series of diagonal and on da marching. This «*aß decidedly good, being performed without the slightest hitch. A squad of Cadets under Sergt. Rout then gave an exhibition of phy-, pical drill exercises, after which a tuij of war between the Cadets and Cycle Corps was witnessed, the former winning easily. An exhibition of boxing was next given by several of the scholars, and judging by the vigproua way in which some of •• the contestants entered into their? boutey. the nrt is an important outdoor sport in the school curric_l»m. The contestants consisted of G. Hoar v. A- Davoy. K. j*e_B v. J. Jennings, Bridge v. T. SinK clair, H. Grace vG. Collins,. A number of echolais then, showed their prowess with tho Tndian clubs and dumb bell exercises, and greatly deserved the applause they received. Another tug of war between the 'day boys ahd boarders resulted in a win for the day boys. A number of tha scholars performed clever feats over the vaultine* hoise, parallel bars, and horizontal bars., and then another tug of war contest was decided between the North Island boarders and the South Island hoarders. This was a good pull, and the latter eventually won. fhe cycle corps gasre an exhibition of rescue work, which was decidedly interesting. . The novelty race was won by' Sinclair, who beat a host of competitors. Bayonet exercises— old, recent, and new styles— were performed neatly by squads under the charge of Sergeants A. Hamilton, Kempfchorne, and Harley. Tho concluding item on the programme was a j sham fight between the two College Companies, who blazed away blank ammunition at one another for nearly half an hour to the intense amusement of the onlookers. The Garrison Band played a number of selections, and afternoon tea 1 was also dispensed. The College Cadets are to be congratulated oo their admirable exhibition. The proceeds will be devoted to the uniform fund.
