A CONTRACT LABOUR QUESTION

LONDON, Yesterday. In connection with the refusal of the Fedoral uthorities to admit a number of hatters who recentl arrived at Sydney under contract, the ''St. James' Gazette, " in commenting on the incident, questions the, ultimato wisdom of Australia's exclusive conduct respecting contract immigrants. As Australia is no longer an outlet for British industry, it adds, Britishers must turn to other directions, and fortunately thore is no lack of territory or welcome elsewhere. SYDNEY, Yesterday. The detention of certain hatters has given rise to a deal of adverse criticism in certain quarters. Mr See strongly protested to Sir K. Barton that the detention of white labor imported under contract for a special industry was opposed to tho spirit of the Immigration Restriction Act. SirK. Barton, after a lengthy consideration of the case, last night ordered the hatters release. Previously the Federal authorities were advised that six more hatters had arrived by the Oruba at Freemantle for the same purpose, and were not allowed to land, Permission was also refused an Indian firm of importers in Melbourne to bring out a number of Brahmen expert workers * in silk and Eastern goods.
