YESTERAY'S CABLES.
LONDON, Yesterday. A Commission has been appointed at Pretoria, under article 11 of the Vereeniging agreement, to assess plaims and make enquiries whether notes and receipts produced as evidence of war losses were issued for valuable consideration. The Government notifies that the grant of three millions under the Vereeniging terms is not applicable to burghers in good financial position. A notification corrects a current impression that any burgher suffering from v/ar losses 19 entitled to share in the grant. Another notice claims interest due on lato Government advances to burghers. Mr Chamberlain travels by way of the Suez Canal, and will land at Durban. He will be unable from lack of time to visit Rhodesia. CAPETOWN, Yesterday. Despite Mr Meriman's strong opposition, the Cape Assembly voted £20,000 to the Victoria memorial. The new ordinance for the Transvaal provides for the application of local option by a majority, or exclusive control of the liquor traffic by trusts for public purposes, the employment of barmaids is prohibited.
