THE CITY WATER SUPPLY
! SITE OF THE PROPOSED NEW I DAM, At the meeting of the City Council last evening, two reports on the work lately carried out in connection with the testing of the site of the proposed new dam at the water--.works were received r Q w Mr. JBo- ':
berts, CE. In the first report reference was made to the striking of the rock in the shaft put down at the dip. In the second report, Mr. Roberts said that he had sunk on the western side of the stream bed, but, after sinking eight feet, he had heen unable to find the rock by the driving of a crowbar. The Mayor said perhaps the Council should stay its hand in regard to testing the site for the present. Cr. Harley said he did not think sufficient effort had yet been made. He would not be surprised if they I had to go down to 20ft. to got the j^rock. there was nothing to be 'alarmed about, but perhaps it would be as well to defer the matter until a City Surveyor was appointed. The Mayor said that the AYf.rk done was very good work, but they could not go further without pumping machinery. Cr. Boon said he had been informed that it would cost about- £3QO to thoroughly test the site. Tho Mayor said the cost would not be nearly so great as that. Perhaps the best way to complete the work would be to put up a fluming to carry the water overhead, and thus allow the work to be done underneath it. Cr. Hunter said if they stopped now the work already done would amount to no more than a waste of money, ti'hey should go on with the work. Cr. Boon said he had understood that Mr. Mestayer had approved oi the site. Cr. Piper pointed out that Mr. Mestayer 's approval was subject to a trial oL the foundations. Cr. Falrey said it seemed from Mr Roberts' report that he was pot satisfied with the site. Cr. Webley moved that a special committee, consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Hunter, Mercer, Piper | Harley, AT.ersten, and the mover | be appointed tc inspect the site and report back to the Council. , Cr. Piper said he was opposed to what had been done in the matter, and he did not care about acting on the committee. At the desire of Councillors, however, he allowed his name to be retained on the committee. Cr. Webley 's motion was then carried, Cr. Fairey dissenting.
