PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
ANNUAL MEETING OF THE NELSON SOCIETY. The fourth annual meetina- of the Nelsou branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals "was held yesterday afternoon in Messrs Bisley Bros ' club room, Mr Robert Snodgrass in the chair. The Secretary (Mr T. Scott) presented the annual report and balance-sheet, which were Jrecei ved and adopted. The report showed that the Society was doing good work, and the inspection preventing 1 much cruelty to animals, more especially to horses. The balance-sheet showed the receipts to be £13 5s lld, and expenditure Ml 14s 3d, with assets £1 lis 8d cash in hand, the liabilities amounting to £6 lld, bat this could be afc once cleared off when the whole of the last year's subscriptions paid in. One of fche lady Vice-Presidents, assisted by another lady member, kindly undertook to aid in collec' ing. The difficulty in this matter arises from (he smallness of the subscription and those who subscribe being so scattered over the city and district. j Beveral who have given donations but are not on the roll as members. It waH resolved, on the motion of the Revi J. P. Kempthorne, seconded by Mrs Harris, that the City Council be approached to allow the Sooiety the use of the services of their veterinary surgeon, Mr Barnes, when necessity arises. It was moved by Mr Snodgrass, and seconded by Mrs Harris, that copies of the period'cals is-ued in connection with the Band of Mercy (the jnvenile branch) be forwarded to the teachers in the town 3Chools. Votes of thanks were passed to Mesdames Molesworth and Browning for their valuable services in collecting subscriptions and obtaining donations; to Messrs Bisley Bros. & Co., for the use of their Club room; to Mr John Guy, referee ; to Mr Maginnity, solicitor; to the corresponding secretaries; to Mr Kingsley, auditor ; to tho Secretary ; and to both tho local newspapers for their reports; and lastly, but not least, to the Chairman for bis very valuable assistance to the Society in many ways.
