The seventh annual show of tho Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Association is being held at Richmond Park to-day The Association, which has experienced only one wet show day (that of 1894), has been again favoured with that most essential element of success — a fine though unpleasantly windy forenoon, with a rather cloudy afternoon. The doubts expressed yesterday, and up till a Into hour hi the evening, were ; happily dispersed this morning, when the day broke cloudless and fine, and for the fifth year in succession rewarded the efforts of the officials who havo been working with their usual energy and interest to secure a successful gathering. There is a very large gathering on the Show ground, and when the latest message was received from our reporter this afternoon the _ number was still being swelled by visitors from various directions. As usual, a large number of people proceeded from town by road, and nearly, if not all, the available vehicles and bicycles havo been in requisition. The railway has also been well patronised. The first train left at 8 o'clock, and carried a considerable number of people, in charge of exhibits of machinery, vehicles etc., which were on board. The train leaving tgwi\ at 10.30 a.m. was well laden and those which went out a$ 12.18 and 1 p.m. carried a very large number of passengers. The. train from Moiupiko brought in a large number of the back country settlers, and the Waimea Motueka, and adjacent district's were weU represented by those who travelled by the roads, whioh aw now » excellent ord.w.

— ■ ---^ ■"-•" - ': : f— '^{'Z^t'"' A. large contingent of Golden 6iy pedpfe also came over the HUb, whilst others came across in the s.s., Lady^ Barkly, which arrived .early thta morning. : The. scene on the ground is an animated one, tho ladies, as usual, being prominent with a display of the latest fashions. la .ummer costumes. The Garrison and' Stoke j Or-, phanage Bands are both in attendance,, and are adding materially to the enjoyment of the salubrious surroundings, which afford a welcome change to many who have had a surfeit of the tedium of the political campaign during the past two or three weeks. So much by way of preface. The weather and attendance being satisfactory, the next subject for attention is the Show itself . The exhibition must be considered to be very satisfactory in regard to the quality and quantity of the exhibits. The total number of entries is 837, thus eclipsing by 93 the record established last year, when the previous high|est total was exceeded by 40 entries. The principal increase is in agricultural I machinery and implements, the number in this department being 61 in advance of last year, and over 100 more than in 1893, when the initial Show of the Association was held with a total of 460 entries in all classes. There are also numerical increases of entries in horses (14), cattle (20), pigs (4), sheep (3), and farm produce 1 16). In domestic produce there is a falling off of 23 from last year, and the dogs — always a smaller class than one might expect to find— are two less than on the two last occasions. An innovation, which should assist to further popularise the Association's fixture, was a parade at I o'clock of all winning horses judged up till that time. A long standing complaint, on which wo had occasion to pass adverse comment last year, was removed to-day, when the popular jumping competitions, in which so much interest is taken, were started early in the afternoon, instead of being put at the foot of the programme and thus reached at the end of the afternoon, when the majority I of the people are preparing to leave for home. This improvement, it is needless to say, was greatly appreciated. The officials as usual had their hands full, the president, Mr W. D. Harknesa, and the secretary Mr John Glen, being especially busy. To Mr Glen, and his assistant, Mr Louisson, our representatives are indebted for much of the information required. The judging was rather late, but the awards were announced in ample time, IMPLEMENTS AND MACHINERY. The display of agricultural machinery and implements is a very prominent and interesting feature of the exhibition. Mr John Ingram has on view a number of specialities, and he is also agent for the following firms :— Booth, McDonald & Co, Cbristchurch ; G. H. Oatway, Dunedin ; Morrow, Bassett & Co, Christchurch ; Andrews & Beaven, Christchurch. Mr W. R. May has several exhibits, and he is also agent for the following firms :— Piano Manufacturing Co, Chicago ; D. Donald, Masterton (wool press) : and Donaghy & Co, Dunedin (binder twine). Messrs Beid & Gray, of Dunedin, have a selection of implements, and Messrs Tasker & Levien, representing the Massey Harris, Ltd., have a well filled stand The Beehive Importing Company are. showing samples of manufactures of Walter A. Wood, Christchurch j and stands are also occupied by A. F. Scholtz & Co., (Nelson); J. F. Papps (Richmond) ; Mason, Struthers and Co (Christchurch) ; Hutsou and Co. (Wellington) ; Buxton & Co. (Nelson) j Hewitt and Co. (Wellington) j W. G. Vining (Nelson); M. Lightband, Luxton and Howard (Nelson), G Ingham (Stoke.) Shortly after 12 o'clock Mr W. D. Harkness (President of the Association) formally opened the Show in a very brief speech, hie aaid tbat tbo officials of the ass .ciation were very well' satisfied this year with the number of exhibitors end frith tha attendance. Six years ago they were told in starting tbe Show that they wonli' not last more than three years. It was now, aa he had said, their sixth ye^r of existence and the number of entries and tbe attendance of tbe public were larger than ever, while the quality of the exhibits had also greatly improved. He said that what they wanted, however, to keep the association flourishing, was a still i- rger number of competitors and enbicribers. In conclusion he hoped that his nesrera would luve an enjoyable time. The Awaeds. The Judges of the various cbeaea are as follows:— Draught Hor^o , A. Hastie, Inaha; Light Horees, W. C.
