NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.
The ordin-.ry monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board" was commenced yesterday, there beijg present Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Best, Beuke, Baigent, Phillips, Maginnity, and Franklyn. Mr Bailie was granted leave of absenee for the meeting. The Education Department recommedded that fire guards should be provided for fire places in schools. -To be considered. Mr Phillips gave notice to move that iu the event of a pupil moving fr*m one scholarship district to another during the year, the pupil be allowed to become a scholarship candidate for that section iu wbioh the greater portion of year was p-pent. For instance, a boy residing at lakaka for eight months of the year, snd then removing to Bichmond, would be alio wed to go np for the Distant Sahools Scholarships, not for the Waimea Boys' Scholarships. Tt was resolved to grant £10 as a bonus to Sergeant-Major Healy for drilling in connection with the town sohools, £6 Bs to the Motneka Vi-Uey Committee, balance for fencing, £6 to the Stanley Brook Committee for roofing, £5 to the Tadmor Committee for work to the teacher's house. An application for painting the Tadmor School wee postponed i ill next month. Mr Franklyn was authorised to inquire into an application for a well at Upper Wakefield, and have authority to order a driven pipe well if considered necessary. The application of the Town Coiamit'ee for a pupil 'teacher's olass-room at Hampden stroet waa postponed. It was res jived that Mv Ellis prepare plans for a teacher's house at Waimea Weet, two stories, at a cost not to exceed i'2so. T .7* Tiv'q applications for inorease of salary were postponed till January next. At the request of members, Mr Phillips withdrew hia motion to inorease members travelling allowances. The Secretary was instructed to give notice to pay off a second instalment of *50f) on the Boyß l Central Bohool site, advice having arrived of the Government grant being available. The Treasurer's statement showed £1839 available on general account and 43697 on building acoonnt. For the Sherry Teaohership, five applications were received, and the names of Misses J. Mackay, L. White, and E. Shirtliff were sent forward. Por female pupil teaohar, Towns Sohools, the names of E. E. Shone, M Page, M. McEacban, E. Dement, O. Hildrolb, and H. ' f The request for an aided school near ] the Reefton railway station was not en- 1 tertained. The regulations framed by the Committee appointed in connection with the proposed Cadet corps were read and ap- i proved, and ordered to be sent to the i Minister for Education.. The Spring Grove Committee notified ■ its consent to the erection of a drill shed : in the school ground by the Waimea :: Rifles. — It was resolved to grant the company a lease of the ground for 10 years at a rental of .£1 a year. The Motueka Committee wrote, ex- ; pressing the opinion that the Board should flaim .£lOOO in regard to the proposal to declare the Motueka river a sludge channel. — The Woodstock Committee advised that the school property there would not be endangered by dredging operations. — Mr Baigent said that there was not much likelihood of the application for a sludge channel being granted. — It was resolved to again defer the matter till the next meeting. The following resignations were accepted : — Miss Frank (East Takaka) with regret) ; P. G. Best Bainham ; Miss Lines, Baton ; Miss Jessop, Owen Junction ; Miss Wylie, Marahau ; Miss McCarthy, Gibbstown. The following' appointments were made : — Miss P. Hughes, assistant, Mo tueka ; Miss F. L. Pry, pupil teacher Lower Takaka. _ It was resolved to agree to the establishment of a household school at Top House, provided that the salary of the teacher is made up to JE2O a year with board and lodging. It was. resolved to agree to the alteration of boundaries of the Takaka school districts. Mr Phillips gave notice to move at th next meeting that experts in cookery dressmaking, plumbing, and carpentering be appointed at Nelson, Wakefield, Motueka, Beefton, Westport, and Golden Bay ; two months instruction to be given in each place, the funds to be provided partly by Government, and partly by a re-transfer of the money previously transferred from the General Account to the Building Account ; the experts to teach teachers and as many children over the age of 14 years as possible. — The Education Department notified that no funds were available for the instruction of technical teachers. The question of the boundaries of the Ngatimoti and Orinoco districts was deferred till the next meeting. It was stated, in reply to an inquiry, that the free use of school rooms could not be allowed for County ; electionß. It was resolved that the next meeting of the Board be held on December 18th and 19th. Messrs Eout and Sons wrote, offering to sell the Board a section of land lying between St. Vincent-street, Washington Road, and Hastings-street, as a girls* i central school site. — It was resolved to reply that the offer will be considered with others when tho question of a site is discassed. Mr Maginnity was granted permission to withdraw his motion regarding the extension of secondary education by the establishment of additional high schools, ' he having ascertained that the initiative i shonld be taken by a School Committee. '< — Mr Pranklyn said that Mr Maginnity > was entitled to great credit for the part ; he had taken in connection with the e3- -' tablishment of the Westport High Shool.
