NELSON CITY COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Nelson City Council was held last Friday. There were present: The Mayor, (MrTrask), Crs Kont, Bi.igent, Light, Kirkpatrick, Fairey, Moller, Akersten. and C, Harley. From the -Chairman of the Town Schools Coininittoe, stating that certain drain works at the Haven Koad school would be earned out. — Cr Rout drew attention to children throwing stones, etc, Reports. Tho Works Committee reported as follows : — - *1. A-i to convenience at thu Theatre — That a convenience be erected by the Council, provided that the Theatre Committee agree aot to remove same without the consent ol' the Council. 2. On letter from Mr E.G. Carter— That this application be granted on condition that tho applicant keep the road clear and op*-n for foot passengers, and pay 10a pcr annum. The Committee recommend that in future all occupants of streets pay such a rent as may be fixed on by the Council. 3. On letter from the caretaker at the Reservoir— That thu offenders be written to and cautioned, and an advertisement be inserted that all offenders in future will be prosecuted, and that the caretaker be instructed to caution visitors to the Reservoir, 4. On letter from Mr Bcthwaite— That Mrs Franzen lie allowed to carry her drain across the road provided that no water-closet lie connected with it. 5. As to engaging cabs — That they have no rccoiamnedation to make. 0. Aa to iron veranda posts — That in the streets mentioned in the building**)regulations, verandas be required to be provided with cast-iron post.-! approved by the City Surveyor. 7. As to Mary Ann-street— That the bad portion of Mary Ann-street be repaired with gravel, and that the pump at i the Bocks be repaired. H. As to Church Hill— That the Church Hill" be cleaned up for Christinas. 9. On letter from Mr A. Davies— That the City Surveyor furnish estimate of cost at next meeting of the Committee. 10. On letter from Mr M. O'Brien— That thej- have no recommendation to make. 11. On letter from residents in the Wood as to keeping swine— That they recommend that tho number of pigs to be kept on any one property l>e limited to two. 12. As to the Collingwood-street bridge — That, the defective joists be replaced. 13. That a license (drivers' passengers' 1 has been granted to Vincent Thomas. On the question of pig-keeping, Cr Fairey thought no one within the city Ifonndaries should be permitted to kee]) pig*; but Crs Harley aud Moller held that pigs might bo kept in the distant outskirts. Cr Moller i-aid there should be a uniformity of verandas and veranda posts, and a by-law should be passed to that 1 effect. Hia object was to improve the appearance of the city. Cr Piper said that the filling np of the water ruts on the Church Hill should be attended to, and he objected to the removal of mate-rial from the sides of the hill. After further discussion, on the motion of Cr Piper, seconded by Cr Moller, the report was adopted without alteration. The Abattoir Committee reported that ! renders for the building were being advertised for in Wellington and Nelson. [ Tlie further consideration of Clause 3 of the Finance Committee's report was deferred for a fortnight in viow of the Mayor's notice of motion. Ml.-*CL,L«NEOUS. The Town Clerk said thero were so many applications for enrolment on the burgess roll that a supplementary roll would have to be printed, Cr Piper said the printing of these rolls waa going to be a great expense to the Councils. The Town Clerk said a new Act shortly came into fores which would remedy the defect. Cr Moller asked if the date of the Mayoral election could be altered, or whether a polling booth could -be erected on the Show ground ; but the Mayor said that any alteration of date or booths would be illegal. Cr Moller said that the rolls were so complicated that people had to look several times to find their names on tho rolls. On the motion of Cr Eout, seconded by Cr Akersten, itwa3 resolved that the Council meet at noon on Monday to consider the unpplementarv roll. In reply to Cr Akersten, the City Surveyor said that tho Sudden Jerk had had a second sail since she was built. She had been through tho battle of Trafalgar since. (Laughter.) Cr Akersten said that she now needed a new sail. On the motion of Cr Akersten, seconded ' by Cr Harley, it was resolved to buv a new sail (cost about £i.)
