THE PREMIER'S JUBILEE TRIP.

To ih_Edhob of "Tbb Bv«»xt*a M_t_." Sir — Both candidates for the city have touched upon this subject, the Premier's claim for £1150, as against the expenses of Featherston, Fitzherbert, and Yogel, ranging from 43000 to .£6OOO respectively iv round numbers as stated by Mr Graham. There is no analogy whatever in the latter named three visits to London as to costs. They went to negotiate money when the colony's credit was too insignificant or barely to be trusted with' a loan. It is utterly absurd to think that such items fc* expenses * were used by them personally. The fact is, they had Stock Exchange financiers to meet and to be won over ot help them to make their business a success, and on their return to the colony all details of expense were' passed by the Honse, and consolidated under the one vote ac personal expenses. _ The Premier on hia Jubilee trip is distinctly another affair. He was the honoured guest of t the nation, free of expenses during his stay and wherever he went. The Parliament of New Zealand intended to be generous, and to allow 41000, as done to the other Premiers of Australia, but did not get the chance, as the Premier came down upon the House with the modest demand for 41750. The debate on the item caused much obstruction, the JPremier refusing any particulars, till he . was compelled to become obedient. Then came by word of mouth the most wonderful details jumbled together, and directly a semblance of account was done, the money in full was 1 voted. . It is left for the taxpayers to drawn their own conclusions. I am, etc., ATLAS. -
