LITERARY CLASS. The usual meeting of (he Richmond Literal? Class was held an Tuesday 'evening, Miss Johnson delivering an excellent lecture on •• Longfeltaw." She referred briefly to Longfellow's ancestors, and gave a sketch of fate early career, educational training, travels, and a short acooont of contemporary anthore, showing that Long., fallow held a, position and filled a, place amongst authora of his time, which none other oonld have filled. Mies Johneon reviewed Longfellow's works, showing that for the number of volumes written, and their popularity .he had never had an equal; in fao6 he was especially the people's poet. It was pointed ont that his works had -been printed in a large number of foreign languages, amongst others in Hebrew, Chinese, and Sanscrit,, this fact alone speaking volumes for hta popularity. , • . The lecture waa interspersed with songs, recitations, efco., from Longfellow's works as follows -.-Overture, American airs, Miss Hodson ; song, Come to me ye cbil dren. Miss Croucher ; recitation, Psalm of Life, Mr Wilkes ; song, The Bridge, Mss Dyson'; song, Village Blacksmith, Mr Hodson ; recitation,. Slave's Dream, Mr Hprnig . song. Arrow and the Song, Miss Talbot ; recitation, Building of the Ship, Mrßotton; song, Excelsior, Mr Eodson. The meeting was concluded by the sioalnit of '• The Star Spangled Banner," followed by a versa of «• God Save the Queen."
