Owing to tbe state of bis health, Mr Webster, jnr., of the Cable Company's service, will not go with Mr Gray to the East. Mr Fairoliilc), son of the oaptain of the Tutanekai, is taking Mr Webster's plaoe, Mr E. W. Stiles' daughter, who met with an accident at Motueka some time ago b.y a kick in the head from a horse, has sufficiently recovered to be brought to Nelson by steamer last nignt under the care of Mr Holyoake. The little sufferer is now with hei' parents. In regard to the attempted suioido at Dunedin by shooting by H. E. Ohinn, the details are as follows.-— Mr H. E. Chinn, traveller for Messrs Sargood, Son & Ewen, shot himself on the night of the 9th inst. So far as can be learned, he was on his way home with a friend whom he asked to " wait a minute." He then stepped intoa right-of-way and aliot himself in the mouth with a revolver, the ball travelling up and lodging in his brain. Ho had been iu bad health for some time past. Mr Chinn was in Nelson about a year ago, when ho was appointed to a position at Home by Messrs Sclanders & Co. Mr Chinn's suicide was evidently due to a disordered mind caused by continued ill»health. Maginnity was held was shown by the largo attendance ab his funeral, says the Wellington " Post." Tn the procession there were 27 carriages. The coffin waß borne from the deceased's late residence in Murphy-street to St. Mary's Cathedral, where a service was conducted by the Very Rev Father Lewis, Administrator of the Diocose, assisted by the Kev Father Holley. At the conclusion of the solemn ceremony the Dead March in " Saul " was played by the organist. The Very Bev Father Lewis and the Rev Father Bower officiated at the grave?ido in the Karori Cemetery. Captain Russell is a passenger for New Zealand by the P. and O. Company's steamer Peninsula, and he is expected in WeUington in a few days. The Minister of Education has eome to the following decision upon the subject of religious instruction in state schools : Ho says it is necessary to make it absolutely clear that the religious instruction is not given during school hours. The provision of secular instruction during the time of religious iustruction tends to render his distinction obscure, and therefore must not be continued. Whatever ceremony marks the opening of the school day on four days of the week must be observed also on the day of religious instruction, and must, on that day, be interposed bet* 1 , een the religious instruction and tho rogular secular instruction, which is the proper work of the school.
