THE TAITAPU MINE.
FORTY-FOUR MEN DISCHARGED,
About 14 minors, who have been working at the Taitapu Company's mine, at West Wanganui, and who were discharged at tho end of last week , came over to Nelson by tho Lady Ikrkly last night. They confirm the report already published as to the unfavourable result of the recent crushing of stone at the Company's battery. Some 480 tons of quartz were crushed, the result being a little over 100 ouncea of amalgam, whioh, it is estimated, will yield nbout 60ozs of gold, or 2idwts. to the (on. Altogether 44 men, including Mr K. Hursthouse, the manager, have been knocked off, in consequence of the unfortunate turn o: affairs, the aasayist alone being kept on. Tho mine will be shut down for the present; but i6 is reported that two direotors are coming out from England to inspect the propertyi Mr V. Johnson is now getting out a trial crushing of 20 tons of stone from the Australasian Gold Trust's property. This will be crushed at the Taitapu battery. There are now less than 20 men, all told, working on the field, tho previous total number being 62.
