THE CAPTURE OF ALLA DALE.
AN EXCITING CHASE. SHOTS FIRED AND AX OBSTINATE RESISTANCE. [United Presa Association.] LYTTELTON, This Day. The escaped prisoner Allandalle was recaptured abont 5 o'clock this morning on the hills at the back of tbe town. Lator. The escaped prisoner Allandalo was recaptured on the hills around Lyttleton to-day. A picket of the Permanent Artillery was stationed round the to nu all night. At 6 a.m., when the picket was being withdrawn, Bombadiers Carthy and Moore saw a man carrying a bag through the Roman Catholic cemetery. Ihey immediately followed. Tho pursued man took a small axe out of the bag, and left the bag behind. On coming up to where ths bag lay, the pursuers found that it sras fall of clothes. They followed the fugitive, aud called on "him to stop or they would fire, when he replied, " Firo away, old man." Mooro, whon abont 40 yards away, dropped a shot close to the man's heels, of whicli ho took no notice. Carthy next fired, and placed a couple of shots near the man, who still took no notice. The man, who pro-red to be Allandale, the escaped prisoner, put his back against the rock, and assumed a threatening attitude. He told hia pursuers to shoot, and they covered him with their' revolvers. Allandale refused to surrender and replied that they would either bavo to shoot him, or he would kill them with the axe. Subsequently Warders Murray and O'Grady arrived, when Allandale threw down the axo and surrendered. He admitted that he had broken into a bouse on "Wednesday night, but ho was scared away. He also admitted that he broke into the shop of Mr Palmer, tailor, on Thnrsday night, and stole the clothes that were in the bag. Allandale will be bronght before the Court on Monday. An inquiry into the circumstances of his escape takes place to-morrow.
