CITY COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. There were present : The Mayor (Mr F. Traek). Cra Baigent, Akersten, Piper, C, Barley, Askew, Lock, J, Harley. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts. The following accounts were passed for payment: — £ S. d. Frora the Secretary to the Nelson Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, complaining of the cycling track in Trafalgar Park. — During the discussion Cr J. A. Harley said tho Trafalgar Park ought to be self-supporting. Only tho other day the Committee voted some money to put the cricket pitch right, and now more expenditure was asked. The Association should itself keep its track in order.— Crs Lock, Askew, and Akersten held that the Park sbould not be be expected to yield a profit, and that those who paid rent should get some benefit from it.— Referred to Works Committee on the motion of Cr Piuer, seconded by Cr Baigent. From Caplaiu Cox, Harbour Master, explaining a statement that had had been made regarding tho prohibition of the removal of stone from the Boulder Bank within a certain area of the Lighthouse. (This referred to a memo of 1883, prohibiting all persons except the Council from removing stone, and defining the areas from which the stone could be taken by the Council. The memo has been pub- ' lished on former occasions).— The Mayor .aid this settled the matter once and for ! all, showing that the Council had the I right to remove the boulders. — Resolved to thank Captain Cox for his letter, Public Works Committee. The Committee reported as follows : — 1. On letter from Mr W. Light. That they recommend that £2 per annum be I charged to Mr Light for the water, the water not to be used when tho supply of water is short, 2. On letter from tho Waimea County Council (to act). Tliat the Council have no I power to take any action in this matter, i 3j City Surveyor's report. Considerai tion deferred. 4. Specifications for boulders. That the ■ specification has been approved as altered, ; and tenders invited. j In regard to the water meter for the , pipe organ at Mr Light 's, Cr Askew moved ' that clause Ibe struck out, as the by-laws 5 were being evaded. l Cr Lock did not agree to the recom- • mendation of the Committee, but he did 3 not think the by-laws were being evaded, i and he did not mind a trial of the system under which Mr Light would take tho 7 water. 1 Cr J, A. Harley moved the adoption of the report. The water required at Mr Light's would be small in quantity, and if tho conditions were not observed the City r Surveyor could sever thc water pipe. t The clause was adopted, Cr Askew disf senting, and saying he would give notice of ,_ motion to rescind tho adoption of the * clause. 1 Tho report as a whole was then adopted, s lenders. S Tenders were then opened for the a supply of bonldera from the Boulder 3 Bank, as follows :— James Burford, at . 3s 6d per cubic yard delivered on the 1 beach, and 4s 4_d per yard and a quarter ; _. F, Atkinson, at 3s per yard and a quarter e delivered on the beach, and 3s 6d per yard and a qnarter delivered at the Gasworks Wharf. 1 The City Surveyor said the tenders e were above bis estimate. V Or Askew said the bottom of tho young 1 Sudden Jerk was rotten, .and a hole conld be driven in it with the finger. The City Surveyor, in reply to Cr i'b Akersten, said one of the punts was d available at any time for the tenderers ,f and the other could be put in order in a 7 week. In reply to Cr J. Harley Mr )C Jickell said the stonebreaker would he e I ready for operations in about a week,
