The Philippine Islands.
Martial Law Proclaimed. Madrid, September 7. Marshal Blanco has proclaimed martial law in the Philippine Islands and imprisoned 200 leaders of the recent agitation there lor separation from Spain, [Tho Philippine Islands (capital Manilla), form a Spanish colony, governed by a Governor-Gentral, the population being 7,500,000. The original inhabitants are Negritos and Igolotes, who work at agriouU turo and are virtually slaves, and c Tagales, who a c of Ma'ay origin and have their own sultans. The Tagales have frequently withstood Spanish attacks, bub they were severely defeated at Mindanao in Maroh, 1895, by tho Spanish troops under General Purrado. The present agitation against Spain, however, seems to havo been fostered among the Spanish colonists by Cuban emissaries, and it does not appear to b: a native rising.]
