PRESENTATION TO SERGT M'ARDLE.

At the City Council last evening Sergt. McAi-dle was presented with an illuminated address from the citizens of Masterton. The Mayor (Mr F. Trask) who presented the testimonial, said it was signed by 68 residents of Masterton, including the Mayor and seven Justices of the Peace. Mr Trask said that although he bad known tho Sergeant so short a time ho recognised in him an efficient officer, and it was pleasing to know that he had given such satisfaction. Tho address was as follows : — Masteuton, August 21st, 1896, F. Trask, Esq.,

Sir — I am forwarding you by this mail a framed address, subscribed by the leading townspeople in Masterton, in testimony of the sterling qualities exhibited by Sergeant Henry M'Ardle during the several years ho was in charge of the police force here. Owing to uncontrollable circumstances a rather lengthy delay has occurred in the preparation ofthe address, lam instructed to ask if you will favour the subscribers by presenting the testimonial to Sergeant M'Ardle, apologising for the delay and assuring Mr and Mrs M'Ardle qf the sincere wish of the residents of Masterton that in their new sphere they will prove of as muoh service as they did here, and that they both may long be spared to enjoy life. Apologising for troubling you this far, I remain, Sir, Yours moss obediently, Akthur Vile.

Representing the Committee. Sergeant McArdle, in acknowledging the presentation, expressed a hope that he would be able to gain the respect of the citizens of Nelson as ho had done elsewhere. He regretted that important official duties prevented him from staying to say all he would like to. (Applause), Sergeant McArdle then withdrew.
