WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council was held to-day. Present : Crs Bird (chairman), Pattie, Beat, Kidson, Waatuey, and Beuke. Inspector's Report. The Inspector of Works (Mr H. A. Tarrant) iu his monthly report stated that the roads had been very soft and difficult to repair duriug the past monttt but the recent fine \veather had improved them, and would, he hoped, enable the maintenance contractors to finish off their contracts satisfactorily. Two stone groins put in by Mr George Keay to protect the river bank at Allington had so far answered their purpose. The new cart bridge and approaches at Thorpe were jusc about completed and prove a great boon. Insufficient work — prior to the wet weather— by most of the maintenance contractors would prevent their contraots from being satisfactorily fioished at their expiration. Willow stakes put in where the Tadmor river had been diverted were expected to make the work permanent. Contracts now io progress were reported upon. Fresh tenders Tiad been invited for seven maintenance contraots expired last month. Aasoonas the weather wassuitable the Inspector intended getting out the work and invitiag tenders for the expenditure of the balance of the grants for Quail Valley and Wakefield-Stanley brook roads. A proposed alteration at the junction of the Sherry and Slippery roads was strongly recommended as saving the maintenance of about 5 chaius of bad road and a nearly level road was subsiituted forasteeprtee. The Inspector thought it advisable to apply to Government for a substantial grauc for re-inatat-ing the road in the upper part of the Tadmor Valley as in the event ot the country being thrown open for selection the road would be required to a much greater extent than at present. According to instructions a travelling chair was being erected across the Motueka river at Pokciro. The reporb was adopted. Mr Beuke moved that in cases where maintenance contracts had been delayed by bad weather a month's extension of tune be granted at the discretion of the Inspector.— Carried, Miscellaneous. Mr Field wrote on behalf of himself and other residents oalling attention to the almost, inpassable state of the roads in Quail Valley. It was resolved that the Inspector be authorised to call for tondere for expending the grant in improving the roads— by the Ootober meeting. The Inspector was authorised to see Messrs Hill and Lloyd re expenditure of accrued thirds about which they wrote. A swing gate asked for by Messrs Drummond Bros., Wangapeka, was granted on the usual conditions. Mr P. Pahl, Tadmor, interviewed the Board stating that he had kept up the road in his maintenance contract to the satisfaction of those travelling on the road, from whom he produe'ed a testimonial. In answer to Or Waatney Mr R>hl said i he quite understood. that his work should, be done to the satisfaction of the Council's, Inspector. Mr Pahl asked for compensa- i tion for work he had done above what had been required by his, contract*. Replying to the Chaiiman, Mr Pahl said he had had the contract two years. The chairman*; Thon there s an end of the matter. Mr Pahl : You don't think lam entitled to any compensation ? . : ' ; ;

A letter from 34 ratepayers of the Motueka Valley, Motupiko Valley, and Stanley Brook objecting to a proposed deviation of the road between •' Motupiko and Stanley Brook was read. The objectors t stated that the old road was safer and oost leu to maintain. Mr G. MoMahon interviewed lbs Board with referenoe to the proposed deviation, Cr Wastney Baid it was not true that the alteratian of the road bad bean made by Messrs MoMahon and Pattie. CrPattiesaid the alteration had been made by the direction oi the Counoil. He thought the petition was nonsense. Cr Kidson thought it a strange thing thai the petition bad not been presented long ago. They had plenty of time when tuo alteration was first commenced. Cr Best said the only thing the Council oould do was to comply with the Act. Cr Pattie expressed his belief that a good many had signed the petition uuuer a misrepresentation of the position. On the motion of Cr Best, seconded by Cr Wastney, it was resolved tu inform the petitioners that the Council intends to proceed with the deviation in terms of Section 123 of the Public Works Act, 1894, as spon t»s the necessary survey has been made. .
