CITY COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of tbe City Conncil was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr F. Trask), Crs Baigent, Akersten, Piper, J. Harley, Look, Everett, and C Harley. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts. From Messrs Neale and Haddow, suggesting a trial of a small ship-load of Westport-Cardiff coal. — Referred to Works Committee. From the Secretary of tho Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, asking for the use of the Trafalgar Park for sports on 25th March, and also for other occasions, and asking terms.— Referred to Finance Committee with power to act. From W. Cookeey, Secretary to the Fire Brigade, calling attention to tbe subsidy (£66 ss) being overdue, and asking for an early answer.— Cr Piper said it seemed to him a very short time since the Bubsidy bad been paid.- Mr Jickell said that the last subsidy had been paid on Deo.- 13th — Resolved to pay the subsidy in a fortnight. From Mr H. T. Hall, in regard to the proposed band rotunda, stating that if the Council would erect the rotunda on Campbell's Mill Site, he would pay in the amount colleoted and guarantee £10 more. — Referred to Finance Committee. Cr J Harley gave notice nf motion for the rotunda to be erected on Campbell's Mill Site. From Mr E. Beaobam, Trafalgar-street, in regard to certain gas meters.— Referred to Public Works Committee, with power to act. From Mr H. Clouston, asking for gravel on Nile-street between his place and the river. — Referred to Works Committee. From the Clerk to the Waimea County Council, forwarding resolution of Counoll, that in order to save litigation they would accept i'2s instead of the £60 received from Mr Edelsten as auctioneer's license. — Cr Piper moved thai the Council write to the Waimea County Council that it sees no reason to alter its decision to refund £10 in full satisfaction as already offered.— This was seconded by Cr J. Harley and catried. Reports. Works Committee, < The Works Committee reported as follows : — 1. On letter from Mr R. Black, That consideration of this matter be deferred for tbe present owing to want of funds. 2. On letter from Mr H. Thetford, That the rubbish he cleared away from i the tree. j i 3. On letter from residents of Nilestreet east, That as Nile-street is outside of the contract for street watering, they are unable to recommend that the request bo complied with. 4. On letter from Mr W. Short. That in the present state of the finances they > are unable to recommend that the request be complied with at present. ' 6. 4s to gns main, That this matter has been considered by the Committee, who are of the opinion that the proposed charge for freight is considerably too high, and that tho City Surveyor write Home again for further information as to freight. On the motion of Cr Piper, seconded by Cr Baigent the report was adopted, Cr Piper saying that the Committee bad been most economical. Finance Committee. The Committee reported as follows :— 1. That « 3 5s be accepted in full for rent to the end of the present season, and that the City Surveyor give an estimate of the cost of repairing the Baths. 2. On letter from Ashmore, Benson, and Co., That owing to the tendency to rise in the price of iron, the gas mains he ordered at once subject to satisfactory arrangements being made as to rate of freight. 3. That the Police be requested to take action against hawkers and others who hate failed to take out their licenses, 4 As to water supply to Colleges, That they have to report that, after several meetings, they agreed with the Governors of the College to state a special oase for the decision of the Supreme Court on the condition that the Governors would agree to pay the arrears if judgment went against them, the Conucil agreeing not to reduce the size of present service if the Colleges were entitled to a supp'y of water free of cost. The Committee have now much pleasure in reporting that the case has been heard in Wellington before His Honour tlie Chief Justice, with the result that judgment was given in favour of the Council. The matter of niakirjg a charge for- water supplied to tbe public schools was he'd over pending the decision of the present case, and the Committee now recommend that a charge he made of £95, per annum for the water spppled to. all the public schools in the city, The report, with the exception of the olause relating to the ordering of the gas pipes, was adopted. City Surveyor's Report. The Surveyor reported that tho cost of repairing damage to the Marino Baths would be £16. — .Kaferred to Publie Works Committep. Unlit Street Lamps. The Mayor drew attention t? complaints from ratepayers (baft several lamps were not lit at night. He (tbe Mayor) also , thought the contractor should keep some ' of the lamps in better order if he hoped . to get a renewal of the contract when it ' expired.
