RAILWAY ACCIDENTS IN 1894.
The Parliamentary return of accidents reported to the Board of Trade ■ as having occurred upon the railways in the United Kingdom (during 1894 states that the accidents to trains, rolling stock, permanent way, etc., caused the death of 22 persons and injury to 409 persons. Six of the persons killed and 62 of those injured were servants of companies, Twentytwo collisions were reported between passenger trains, or parts of passenger trains, by which ono person was killed and 88 injured ; 26 collisions between passenger trains and goods dr mineral, trains, etc,, 16 persons . being killed and 19 injured'; 11 collisions between goods trainß, or parts of goods grains, 17 persons being injured; 47 cases of passenger trains or parts of passenger trains leaving the rails, one person being killed and 43 injured ; five cases of goods trains or parts of goods trains leaving the rails, five persons . being . injured ; three cases of trains or engines travelling in the wrong direction through points, 13 persons being injured ; four failures of wheels, one person being injured ; 186 failures of axles, one person being killed and one injured; and eight failures of couplings, one person being killed and four injured. Of 620 persons killed and 1052 injured in passing over level crossings, in trespassing, • or through their own want of caution etc., 101 killed and 821 injured were passengers. Of these 80 persons were killed and 31 injured at level crossings, 283 killed and 1 27 injured when trespassing, and 112 committed suicide on railways. There were 473 servants of companies or contractors killed and 2649 injured, in addition to , those included under the first head. These' accidents were chiefly caused in opupling operations or to fiersohs working or walking on the inc. Altogether the number of persons killed and injured on railways in the United Kingdom in the course of public traffic during 1894 ■was 1115. and of injured - _ 1 20, as compared with 1011 killed ami 4109 Injured in 1893.
