DEATH OF MR. F. DE VERE.
As will be seen by a Press Association telegram it is announced that Mr F. De Vere, the well-known landlord of the Ship Hotel at the Port, died on board the Lochnagar, on the trip between Nelson and Lyttelton, last Friday. Mr De Vere had been suffering from tho after effects of an attack of influenza and disked a change. As an old sailor with an intimate knowledge of the New Zealand coast no doubt he was capable of bcine of great service to the master of the barque. Unfortunately, instead of his health improving it got worse, and the end came on I* riday, As it was impossible to keep (he body for burial ashore it was buried at sea, Mr De Vere was well-known in Nolson and was generally liked. For three years he was a member of that useful body tlie Salvage corps. The flags at the Central Fire Brigade Station aud at tlie Port were at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect. He leaves a widow, two sons, and a daughter.
