The Melbourne Sewer Accident.
.[United Press Association.] Melboubne, Thia Day.
An inquest on the victims oi Ue tunnel accident has been begun. The evidence shows that a.powerful dredge has been eating away the bed of tbe river in the neighbourhood of the tunnel for some time. While the steamer Bothwell was grounded ai the spot, indications of the unsoundness of the bottom had been observed by air bubbles on the surface of the river, but the matter was not reported to the responsible persons. There was only ono man in the chamber instead of two, as is the custom in England; and it was shown that when the four men were in the air chamber tbe inflow of water to tho inner compartmen t turned off the valve and allowed tho air to escape as they let themselves out. This destroyed the last chance and the men were imprisoned in a death trap.
