Notwithstanding the irevious wound inflicted by the late crisis rpon the colonial banking system, the mpreinacy of the banks is less questioned •han over, largely because nearly every brut of rival institution has been swept
away. The most Btriking feature of the returns la the exceptionally large increase in current accounts, the balances of which during the half-year increased by nearly a million and a half. It certainly appears [ that after a long period of wasting away of its resources the wealth of the colony has again commenced to grow. Progress is slow, but the colony is no longer drifting to leeward. There is {plenty of unused capital to be utilised whenever the onward march is fairly resumed.
