general revenue ; add, if -necessary, that direot taxation shall be enforced to cover loss. Mr Wheeler adversely criticised the motion, which he declared involved an outlay of over half-a-million sterling. The Minister for Railways said the Government had no objeotion to the reduction if the deficit were made-up. The Premier said that -he would oppose the motion, unless it were modified bo as to ensuro direct taxation.
