A great meeting of merchants, bankers, and all olasseß of the public, convened by the Chamber of Commeroe, has been held in London, Mr Follit presiding, and a resolution was carried urging the Government to take immediate steps to ensure the Naval supremacy of Great Britain, irrespective of cost. The proceedings were characterised by great enthusiasm . In the House of Commons, Lord George Hamilton, Firßt Lord of the Admiralty in the Salisbury Administration, has tabled a motion containing the subject matter of the resolution, Flag Ship in Australia, The Admiralty nas informed the AgentGeneral for Viotoria ttat the statement that the Cresoent is to replace the Orlando is not true, and that the latter vessel is to be retained on the station. A remission haa beeu applied for. Masonic Deficit. Melbourne, December 13. Mr Lempriere, Secretary of the Grand Lodge, explains, in connection with tbe deficit in the Masonic accounts, that ten years ago his assistant robbed him of the amount of the deficit in the benevolent fund, The matter he says was reported, and as he thought, arranged* It has been decided to ask Mr Lempriere to resign, and there the matter will end. Trade with Canada. Wellington, December 13. The information already in possession of the Commissioner of Customs respecting trade between New Zealand and Canada Bhows that aB yet it is not of a very exten» sive character, Personally Mr Ward is of opinion that the Colony Bhould not be represented at the Conference in the Dominion, and believes that, so far as New Zealand is concerned, negotiations could be carried on by correspondence. What is wanted first, Mr Ward says, is for the Vancouver line of steamers to call at New Zealand ports, aud reciprocity could be discussed later on. Government Bills. Ia Cabinet to-day, it wss deciatd to agree to Dr Lemon's letirtnent from the Sup*rintendency of tbe Telegiaph Department at his own request on a pension, He will sever his connection with the Department at the end of Maroh, but a succes-sor has not yet been appointed. This will probably be done tomorrow. Navigation at Jackson's Head. A deputation from the Shipmaster's Association waited on the Minister for Marine to-day, in connection with improving navigation near Jackson's Head, Cook Straits. The deputation urged ttat the outer and inner channels should be surveyed, and that something should be done in the nay of erecting beaconß to assist masters of steamers to : avigato with safety. The Minister Baid he fulJy recognised the importance of the matter and would take steps to have a survey made of both channels! He would also get a report regarding the desirableness o erecting beacons or a light on Jackson's Head, and would then see what could be done in that direction. N. Z. Rifle Association. Christchurch, December 13. A meeting of citifiens was held this afternoon, and presided over by the Mayor elect, to consider matters in connection with the next meeting of tbe New Zealand Rifle Association. Captain Barman, the local representative of the Association, reported tbat he bad informed Muj-*r Fomerville that the sum ncc.ssnry had been guaranteed, and tbat he had received a reply that Christchurch had been definitely selected as the site for the next meetiug, and that the programme would be issued to-morrow. A committee was appointed to canvass for further subscriptions. Athletic*. Auckland, December 13. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Society, having forbidden its members to compete ac the cominy Caledonian sports, a deputation to day protested, and stated that in every city in the colony the Amateur Athletic Clubs had permitted, their men to permit.
