Mr J. G. Harkness, M.ILK., haa decided not to contest the Nelson seat. Yesterday he sent Mr VV. E. Atkinson the following telegram : — ' ' Carefully considered request, for which accept grateful acknowledgement. Regret deem it advisable decline Nelson. Of opinion local candidate would probably do best in Opposition interests.— Joseph G. Hakkness, New Plymouth." At the meeting of the City Council last evening, in reply to a question put by Cr J» Harley, the Mayor said that there was no fund out of which a grant could be made to the Salvage Corps except tho general account. Mr Hursthouse while ho bad a seat in Parliament held a high position in his party and in the House of Representatives, aid it is to be hoped that he may be induced to return to politioal life. The monthly meeting of the members of the Nelson Fire Brigade was held last evening, when there was a good muster, Captain Bird occupying the chair. After the transaction of the ordinary business, tenders were opened for erecting a hose-reel station at the Railway station, The tender of Mr H, Young of £19 10a wa. aooepted. Notice was reoeived that in consequence of the site being needed for the extension of the Coach and Horses Hotel the Brigade mast remove its hose reel station, whioh is adjacent to that building. It was pointed out tbat this was in some respects the most useful station in town on acoonnt of its central position, and a hope was expressed that some citizen would help them by granting the use of land or build iug close to Trafalgar-street station , Ultimately it was resolved that Capt. Bird and LieutKingbe deputed to see whether a suitable plaoe oould be obtained. A resolution was adapted unanimously thanking all those friendi who had kindly contributed to tbe annual supper of the member.. AS entertainment of a very interesting character will be given on Tuesday evening next at the Shelbourne-street sohool by the members of the Cathedral Choir. A programme of ohoioe vocal seleotions haß been arranged, but the intention is that the entertainment Bhall be more in the form of a Booial gathering, the ladies of the ohoir having kindly undertaken to provide ample refreshments for visitors. We feel sure that we can promise all who attend aa enjoyable evening. The regulation, which is to come into fore. within six months, will fix the minimum age at which a girl may marry at 8 yeare, and a boy at li. Any person who brings about the marriage of children under thia age will be punished with imprison- j ment of six months, a line., or both. A J male over the age of 18 may not many a i <nrl of 8 under a similar penalty. A man over 50 years of age is not to be allowed to marry a girl under 14 years of age, under pain of imprisonment, which may extend to two years. An aider or abettor of such an offence is liable to imprisonment for six months.
