The death of Jay Gould leave b only six millionaires in the United States : — Vaaderbil*-, whose fortune is estimated at *iS millions sterling ; Mackay, with »0 millions ; J P Jones, with 24 millions ; J G Bennett, with 10 millions ; J J Astor, with 8 mil lions ; and W Stewart, with the fame. Welsmore r.nd Lorillord. cf New York ; Muun, of Chicago ; and Lyman nnd Perkins, of Boston, are believed to average about •i millions each ; and there are understo d to be not lesa than a hundred persons in the .States who are entitled to rnnk as millionaires in the English senee of the word. In view of an expected reappearance of cholera next spring, General Wahl, rrefect of St. Petersburg, has proposed to the municipal authorities the formation of twenty-five sanitary corps, charged with the duty of carefully inspecting the houses, business and commercial establisnments, public lodging-houses, cesspools, etc., in the various Quarters of the capital. D scusaicg the population statistics of the Australasian Colonies the Sydney Morning Herald says :— '" New South Wales, as was expected," heads the list in aggregate population, showing 1,197,070 to 1107,329 for Victoria, which makes a gosd second. But even more favourable than this is (he proportionate increase for the year, being 31,750 in New South AValrs, against 9,525 for the sister colony. But there are some features in connection with this dmarity that are ?ppcially to be noted for the causes from which they may be supposed to arise. We Pnd that while the increuse iv this colony by the excess of births over deaths has been 25 035, the corresponding increase in Victoria has been 21,935 ; but in the latter case the benefits of the natural increase have been reduced by an emigration of 12,410 persons from the colony in excess of those who had entered it. The only other colony which shows a departure of population beyond the number of people coming in is Tasmania, in which during the year nearly as rniny have gone away as have been supplied by births in excess of deaths, only 525 being ndded to the population of the colony, although 2,896 more biiths than deaths have taken place in it. The manner iv which New Zealand hes « turned the corner 'is shown in the proportionate increase of its population. In that respect it stands seoond among the seven colonies, showing an addition of 18 375 to its population for the year, of which 4958 are due to the excess of immigration over emigration. This shows the exodus, which was for a number of yearß the normal condition of the colony, to have been stayed, and the tide of population to be steadily flowing again."
