ST. ANDREWS ORPHANAGE.

Tho annual meeting in connection with this Institution waa held at four o'clock yesterday afternoon iv the Council Chambei s, the Bishop of Nelsou occupying the chair.

The Rev J. P. Kempthorne (Scretiry read the annual report as follows : —

•' This Institution, which was initiated by the Synod in the year ISS6 has been steadily and quietly carrying ou a good and most necessary work in providing for and training destitute and orphan children. Iv the month of January the annual meeting of subscribers was held, aud Messrs R. Saodgrass and J. Holloway were elected to fill the two vacancies whioh had occurred by lapse of time, The Trustees are, at the present time, the Bishop of Neb n, Rev J. P. Kempthorne, Jtjesira S. B. White, J. Holloway, It. Snodgrass, and Dr. Looking. In September last five destitute children were admitted into the Reoeiviug Home in Waimea road, and one lad, who is paid for by hiß father, was sent to the Whakarewa Orphanage and placed under Mr Whiti The total number of destitute children uuder the control of the Trustees is now 34, or.c ot whoni is at service earning his own living, and costs the Institution nothing. There are uj.io children at the Home uuder the supervision of Mrs T iylor, the Matron, who continues to give great satisfaction to the Trustees by the way in which she circs for the children committed to her oharge. The Trustees have boarded out eigbt orphans at the Whakarewa Institution in Motueka, where the children receive an industrial training. Mr and Mrs White keep jthe house in beautiful order, and their management is in all respects ad* mirable. Tho re3t of tho children are boarded out as follows:— Two at Suburban North, four at Brightwater, eight in Nelson, and three in Greymouth. The sum of £123 5s 5d waa received from tha Government as subsidy in 1891, The subscriptions [ia the same year amounted to £72 16?. This is not up to the amount received in former yeare, and wo "Lrust tbat this year the friends of the Institution will continue their generous help and. seek j;o enlist tho sympathy of other?, as there are many cases arising from time to time which require urgent help. The total amount of expenditure on account of maintenance was £10(3 10» tor twelve months ending March 31st, 181)2. T o meet thi?, in add tion to the Government subsidy and subscription?, the sum of £2'j2 l'Ji was received on behalf of maintenance from the guardians of orphans. It is much to be desired that the work of tbe Institution should be made known not only in Nelsoa and tie neighbourhood, but also in Blenheim and the West Coast,, in order that support may be drawn from those parti of the Diocese, and the benefitg also extended (Vo those districts. The Institution is muoh indebted to the Committeo of Ladies who assifct in collecting subscriptions, and ia visiting the orphans and exercising a watchful and lov-. ing care over chem." The reput and balanec*stiee«j w.ero then formally adopted, aud the Rev J P Kemptborno (re-elected) and Mr J II Newman appointed Trustees. Votes of thanks to the ladies, the Secretary and Treasurer, the Oranga Lodge?, and tbe Chairman were passed, and the meeting brought to a close.
