Mr Long has been eleoted for the west Derby division of Liverpool constituency, lately represented by Mr W. H. Crosp, (C). Olr Long defeated the Home Rule candidate by a majority of 1257 votec Sir Lyon Playfair and Professor Bryoe, in disonssing Mr F. D. Labillire's paper read at a meeting of the Colonial Institute, urged tbat the Oolonies shonld assist to maintain a common fleet, whioh would be the easiest way of beginning federation.
Pabis, January 11. The trial of ten members of the Senate and Onamber of Deputies, authorised by the respective Chamber?, has been abandoned, owing to the insufficiency of evidenoe, and tbe only prosecutions that are to be persevered with are those against the Direotors of the Company ond MM. Baihantand S»nsbroy. M Charles de Lenseps, for the information of the Judge, stited that Baron Reinaoh wanted 15,000 000 franos, but only reoeived 6,000,000. The Direotors of tbe Company were not aware how the money was applied. M. Baihant demanded a million franos for introducing the Panama Canal Lottery Bill, but only reoeived 400,000 franos. The Judge expressed amazement at M, de Lesseps's admission, aod reproaohed the Directors for deoeiviog the publio.
