Ll/i'AS'.s Nelson, Blenheim, and West Coast Almanac and Year Book for 1803 has been issued. As usual it contains v great deal of useful information and is sold at a very low price. Though the almanac is similar in torm to previous issues, vaiious novelties have been introduced including several which cannot fail to bo useful to farmers and others engaged in country occupations. There are directories of Nelson, both town and country, and of those parts of the West Coast and Marlborough intimately connected with the district. Much of tlio information is such as is not easily obtained from any other source, and there is no other compilation of tlie sort in the district. To both and country people it will be found exceedingly useful. Mr Tkasic has some very fine fafc sheep in his coiner paddock opposite the Panama Hotel. The two wethers in question were brought; from Mr Turner's farm afc Admiralty Bay near the French I'ass. Mr Trask thinks that the sheep average lOOlbs each. Mr Trask lias also in the same paddock a very fab mare. This animal is one of the f atcst specimens of horse ilesli we iiave ever seen. A serious flre broko out at Brightwater yesterday aftsruoou on the property of Mr John Suowden. The damage sustained by Mr Suowden ia considerable, a large hop kiln aud a commodious implement shed, as woil as some farm machinery, having been destroyed by tho ilames. Ifc appears that yesterday afternoon one or two of Mr Snowden's sous were employed dressing flax, The engine which drove thy machinery was not far from tho hop kiln and implement shed, and it is thought thafc a spark from the engine chimuey must bavo fallen npo:i the upper floor of the hop kiln, which was covered with fiax dust, which is, we understand, highly inflammable matter, and thus have set the building on fire. Before anything could bo done to subdue the lire the whole building was in ilames. Tlie young men working at the flax dressing did not notice the lire for some time, thinking the smoke from tlie burning building was coming from the engine. Ah soon as the fire was discovered several neighboursarrived and gave what assistance they could, hut ' a chafl'cutter and one or two bags of chad' wore all that were saved. In tlie shed burnt down there were five tons of dressed flax, a quantity of expensive farm machinery, rick cloths, &c, A farmer who happened to be present, and to whom we arc indebted for this information, states that Mr Snowden's loss will be quite A'.'IOO or i'.'ioO. It is believed that there was no insiuance on tlie buildings, We are glad to be able to state that fche engine and flax mill were not much damaged.
