London, Ootober 14. The strike of men engaged at the Imperial Institute building has collapsed. It is reported that the proceedings instituted by Colonel H.M. Hozier, of the 3rd Kent Artillery Volunteers, to obtain a divorce from his wife, Lady Henrietta Blanche, daughter of the seventh Earl of Airlie, have been abandoned. The steamer Umbria experienced Bimilar weather, while crossing the Atlantic to the
steamer Augusta Viotoria, and two of the female passengers died of fright. The New Zealand Shipping Company's new steamer Ruahine will be launched at Dum barton on tbe 20th inst. Mons Meg started nearly first favorite for the Czariwitoh Stakes, but was never dangerous, and finished far behind. The winner was a rank outsider. Oou'tess Russell intends to sue for a judicial separation from her husband. Mr David Christie Murray, the novelist has been adjudged a bankrupt. Mr Labouohere declares that Mr Parneli informed him that Captain O'Shea was con cerned in the forged letters whioh played a prominent part at the Parnell Commission ; also that the oaptain had obtained money from Mr Chamberlain with which to pay I Pigott. | Mr Babbage, one of the shareholders of the Bank of South Australia, considers thab the recent circular issued by the Directors as to I the Bank's position is unsatisfactory and also that their proposals are alarming. He therefore proposes to move that a Committee of seven be appointed to make an independent scrutiny of the Bank s position, and report within two months. The Cork Convention has been postponed until the 27th inst, as the McCarthyites fear that the populace might make an attack on them. The Council of the Colonial Institute have sent a letter of condolence to Mrs W. H Smith. Brussels, Ootober 14. A passenger boat on the River Scheldt oapsized, and ten persons were drowned. Ottawa, October 14. M. Mercier, Premier of Quebec, who was adjudged guilty of corrupt practices in connection with the Bale Chaleur railway, fears that an attempt will bo made to assissinate . him, and has applied for polioe protection. A member of the Dominion House of | Commons threatens to reveal corruption of a | worse nature thau that already adduoed. i New Yobk, October 14, It is a oattle steamer, not the City of Rome, which has been wrecked off Newfoundland, Monte Vide 3, Ootober 14. Fifty-three of those taking part in the recent riots have been shot.
