A man named Joseph Valentine Bourke, who was under a warrant of commitment to New Plymouth Gaol for disobeying an order of the Court, jumped off the Manawatu Company's train near Shannon this morning, but was captured after a chase for a mile or bo.

Wanganui, Ootober 12.

At the Supreme Court William Noble and Harry Laing were charged with stealing £239 from Joseph Abbott. Several witnesses were examined for the prosecution, -The only new point adduced militated against the Grown, showing that the accused had expressed their intention of going to Upokongaro before they knew, so far as the evidence showed, that Abbott was going there with the money. No evidence was called for the defence. Mr Coatea, in addressing tbe jury, relied on the great laok of evidence, all of whioh was circumstantial, and Mr Hogg followed in a similar strain. The Judge's summing up occupied half an hour, and the jury retired at six o'clock, returning at nine with a verdict of Guilty againßt both prisoners. Sentence was deferred till Wednesday morning.
