ENGULPHED ON MOUNT VESUVIUS.
Further particulars are published concerning the terrible aocidenton Veauvius, in which M. Sylva Jardim lost his life. He made the asoeufc of the mountain, accompanied by his friend, M. Mendonoa. and a guide. When they had reaohed the top they witnessed phenomena which inspired the gaide with considerable apprehension. Not only volumes of smoke and vapour were issuing from the crater, bub dangerous oracks were seen to open ia various places. MM Jardim and Mendonca nevertheless pushed on. They had advanced but a few steps when suddenly the earth opened, and literally swallowed up the unfortunate M. Jardim. M. Mendonca was ia a scarcely leßs enviable position ; he also had fallen into a chasm, but had saved himself from going to the bottom of the fiery gulf by stiffening himself oat, with his feet pressing agaiußt one side and his head and hands rgainst the other Bide of the chasm. He was rescued by the guide, who had romained behind, but who now ran to his assistance. M. Jardim, who arrived in Paris soon after the .Brazilian devolution, of whioh he was one of the leaders, was only thirtyone years of age. He leaves a widow and three young ohildren.
