NEW ZEALAND.
Wellington, September 4. A deputation from the New Zealand Rifle Association, consisting of Majors Sommerville and Donald and Captain Griffiths, aooompanied by the local M.H.R's., waited on the Defence Minister last evening, lor the purpose of ascertaining what assistance might be expected in obtaining and preparing a permanent rifle range in Wellington for the annual gatherings of the Association, and the use of warships frequenting the Colony. The Defence Minister replied that he was fully of opinion that if a Colonial rifle range was to be established it Bhould be near Wellington, as being most central J he was, however, not in a position to make any direot promise of pecuniary assistance, I owing to suoh a large amount having to be laken from the Volunteer vote for the purchase of Pollhill Gully range, but as the question was of importance he would bring it before the Cabinet. The question of ammunition was raised, and Mr Seddon expressed himself as being willing to do all he oould for the Volunteers, and said he was arranging for a supply, whioh he believed would be cheaper than the present -rate.
