WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Waimea County Counoil met at half • past ten o'clock in the Eduoation Board Room. Present : Messrs Bird (Chairman), W. Thompson, A. Thompson, G. Sinclair, Best, Beiike, and Pattie. Inspector's Beport. Mr Tarrant reid his report, Jt contained a suggestion that a wire bridge aorosa the Rolling River should be moved, as the tree to which the bridge was fastened On one side of the river had become undermined. The Inspeotor stated he could have the bridge moved for a Bum of -62. — It was resolved that the bridge bs moved, The report was adopted.
Correspondence. The Chairman Baid he had replied to a letter reoeived from Mr Mills, M.H R. f referring to the new Counties Aot Bill A letter was received from Mr R. Ellis of Motupiko Btating that the main road through Norris's Gully ran through his land. He asked for compensation. It was Btated that the Upper Motueka Boad Board, now defunct, had not recognised any .[responsibility when asked for compensation. Mr W. B. Thompson moved that two members of the Council be appointed to enquire into the matter and report at next meeting. This was seoon-led by Mr G. W. Beat and oarried. Application for Lease. Mr Hooper waited on the Counoil and applied for leave to lease for five years or more the reserve adjoining his land at Wakefield. Mr Pattie moved that three members of the Counoil be appointed to enquire into the matter and report to the next meeting. Mr Best seconded the motion which was carried. Annesbrook. Mr G. Field waited upon the Council, and complained that one of his paddocks was constantly being flooded by flood water off the Council's road near Annesbrook. The matter was referred to the Inspector to re™ port to tbe next meeting. Wairoa Gorge Jtioad. _ Mr E. Andrews asked for £10 compensa tion owing to his land at the Wairoa Gorge being cut up by the deviation in the new road. Mr Sinclair proposed, and Mr W. B. Thompson seconded, that the application be not entertained. Mr Beuke moved as an amendment that the matter be left to tho Chairman and the Inspector. This was seconded by Mr Besfc, Mr Sinolair withdrew his resolution , and Mr Beuke 's motion was carried Application for JRoads. Mr Cooke applied for a road to be made to his seotions (22 and 27) at Wai-iti. Mr Sinclair said if they made roads to every section it would take more money than they had to spend. It was resloved that as the road would have to go through private land, enquiries should be made as to how much the owner of that land would require to allow the road to run through hia land. A petition was received sigaed by four holders of leased land to whioh a road had been reoently laid off through part of seotion 164 at Foxhill, asking the Council for a grant of £30 to be spent in opening the said road, so as to enable the leaseholders to occupy their land, as at preseat they were entirely looked out. It was resolved that the Inspeotor visit the locality and report to the next meeting. Stanley Brook. A letter was received from the Chairman of the Stanley Brook Sohool Committee stating that the foot-bridges across the water ways in that locality were in very bad repair. He stated that after rain the roads were so deep in mud that the ohildren oould not attend the school unless these footbridges were put in repair. The Inspeotor said he had had planks laid down. He had often been at Stanley Brook but had never seen the roads in the state that the Chairman of the School Committee des3ribed. The matter was finally left to the Inspector to pub down what planks he considered necessary. Tadmor Boad Board. Mr Phillips presente i a petition from the ratepayers of the Tadmor Road District requesting the Council to merge the^ said district into the Council. Mr Phillip9"'s.._d that the Board had, by levying a rate alter the steps were taken for merging, caused a great deal of indignation among the ratepayers. Mr A. Thompson moved and Mr W. B. Thompson seconded, that the prayer of the petition be granted. Oarried unanimously. Mr Beuke moved " tbat all Road Board Districts not levying an ordinary rate, and wherein a farthing rata does not exceed £-0, to be subsidised equally to the am-unt of their rate." The motion was not seconded and there* fore lapsed. Levy of a Bate. Mr Pattie moved thai the levy of a _d rate all over the County proposed at the last meeting be confirmed. Wangapeka. Mr Mcßae interviewed the Council re the new road which the CjUnoil intended to make through his run at the Wangapeka. ! He stated that it would take less money t > make the old road available than to mako the new one. The new road would cost three times as much t > make as it would to repair the old one. Tho old road did not need gravelling but fche new one would. Mr Beuke proposed that the matter be deferred till the next* meeting ol the Counoil so as to allow the Inspeotor to furnish the Co.uccil with an estimate of the difference in tbe oost of improving the old road and making the new one. — Mr Pattie secondad the motion. —Oarried. Mr A. Thompson moved that Mr W. B. Thompson and the Chairman go with the Inspeotor to inspect the road.— Seoonded and oarried, A letter was received from the Dovedale Road Board.— lt was resolved thab the letter lie on the table. Motuelca Wharf. Mr Rogers's report was read dealing with the working of the Motueka wharf. After some disoussion Mr Pattie moved that 48 hours free storage be given to all outward oargo except chaff and flax. Inward oharges to remain as before. Seoonded by Mr Beuke, Mr G. Sinolair proposed as an amendment that no further concessions be made, but that the present regulations be enforoed. Seconded by Mr B?st. Tha resolution was carried. Mr Pattie moved that £3 33 be voted to Mr Rogers from the Motueka Wharf Fund for his trouble in preparing the report. This was seconded by Mr Sinclair and carried. (.Left Sitting.')
