The Sydney Morning Herald of a receafc date says: —Another of these immense meatcarrying steamers arrived in Sydney harbor yesterday, tho oarrying oapaoifcy being for 05,000 oaroaases of muttoa. The vessel is named the Hawkes Bay, and is stated to be the first steel steamship Bpeoially built for the Australian and New Zealand trade by Messrs Tyaor and Co,, Limited, of London, Hitherto Messrs Tyser have maintained their oolonial business iu steam by the em* ployment of chartered vessels, and the Hawkes Bay represents their first purohase. Having seourcd both iu Queensland and in Now Zealand largo oontraots for carrying frozen meat, the now ship is designed particularly with a view to that trade, The passenger traffic is not oontemplated at present so nuioh as the freight trade, and as the demaud iu the colonies for steamers to oarry frozen meat has greatly increased of late years the construction of such vessels as Messrs Tyser's has become a necessity. The introduction of these great oarrying steamers in the Anglo-Australasian, trade haa had the effeot of bringing down rates of freight on merchandise from Great Britain, and has prejudicially affeated the business of sailing ships, Cargoes musk be found for the Bteamers coming out to the colonies under engagement to load meat for the home marketa, and the competition in freights to Australia has become intensely keen at tha prinoipal English and Continental ports, The addition of the Hawke's Bay with a gross capaoity equal to 4600 tons has a special interest in this rospeot.
