N.Z. MIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANY.
The Bullionitt of the 30th November oontains a fall report of the general meeting ol shareholders in this Company, held ths day previously. The Chairman, in hia address, spoke ia hopeful terms of tbe prospects of the Com* pany. Mr Alexander Solanders asked for some information as to the JBeigrove portion of the line. As a Canterbury and Nelson man, from his own knowledge of that part of the ooun - try, he thought it was important for settlement. The Chairmau— l am very muoh obliged to the gentleman for asking that question, and although 1 did not wish to trespass oh your patience, I wanted to gay something on that subject. We have sent out as our general manager in New Zealand a gentl-eman with whom many of you may be acqua nted, viz., Mr Wilson, who is engineer Of our line, who Ib a man of great ability, and who also has the advantage of having seen a good deal of the Board here, bo that he thoroughly knows our mind and our policy. He has only beon in New Zealand for a very short tima, and so, of course, he has not been able to send us a full report, or to enter into the various questions which he has to consider with great oare and detail. Now it happens that this Nelson line is one of these questions whioh he will have to examine very carefully, because there is great doubt as to what the Nelson people themselves wish, and what is the best wky of dealing with the. question, But I may tell Mr Solanders that we are pledged to spend a certain amount of money there, and, in faot, to go further— we had a sort oi indireot suggestion that we should deviate frem that arrangement, and we have written to refuse distinctly to do so. So that I hope we shall oarry out the work on the Nelson line aB Boon as we get the proper information.
