The Output of Copper

rARis, May 24. The American mine owners have ratified the scheme for the reduotion of the output of copper proposed a fortnight ago. [special. 1 London, May 20. Henri Roohefort asserted during the hearing of the oharga brought against him yesterday that his objeot waa merely to frighten Filotel, the artist, whom Roohefort was oharged with attempting to shoot, and that the revolver he presented at him was enclosed in a leather caeo. Mr Gladstone has received addresses of sympathy and encouragement, whioh were forwarded him by the States of Minnesota and Wiaoonain.

Copies of papers containing verbatim reports of the Speech delivered by Sir Hercules Robinson at tho farewell banquet tendered him prior to his departure from the Cape have reached here by mail steamer. The newspaper reports enow that the extraots of his speech" oabled from the Cape were greatly exaggerated, and that the remarks made by Sir Hercules as to the neoessity of the federation of the South African States and the ultimate declaration of independence, whioh caused oonaiderable consternation in politioal circles in London, were much magnified.

M. Davies, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Victoria, and Mr James Henry Young, Speaker oi the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales, to be Companiona of St Michael and St George.

With reference to the recent gambling prosecutions no penalties were inflicted on the visitors charged with baccarat playing. It is asserted that Irving Bishop had previous to his death expressed a desire for a prompt autopsy of his remains. The doctors assert that the body was enolosed ia an air. tight box before the autopsy was performed, therefore it was impossible that Bishop waa alive at the time of the operation.

Berlin, May 20. In the course of a speech in the Reichstag, Prince Bismarck, referring to the utteranoea of M._ Antoine, deputy for Metz (Alsaoe Lorraine), who recently resigned his seat and retnrned to France, said it was impossible to forecast the events of 1890, and expressed an opinion that the conquest of France by Germany would be useless if, as in the present oase, deputies from th« ooa-

quered territory were to be peiTaitted to inocculate brother deputies in the Reichstag with th'ur opinions.

The Weßtphalian strikes will terminate on Tuesday, the masters having agreed to concede everything except the demand for overtime, on which point they are bound by the regulations of the Standing Committee, composed of masters and men. Strikes are, however, spreading in Silesia.
