Sydney June 6. In the football match between Bathurst and Englishmen played to-day, the latter won by 13 points to 6. In the Supreme Court, in the case Hall v. Eailwsy Oommiasioner. a compromise has boen arrived at. The claim was for £30,000 for alleged damage and loss by the plaintiff through breaches of oontraot in oonnection with the construction of the Glen Inneß Tenterfield Bailway. The terms of the com promise are that the piaintiff receives £5000. Melbourne, June 6. Arrived— s.B. Waihora from Bluff. The Anti-Viviseotion Society have hrough the Agent General warned the Government against the introduction of M. Pasteur's disease into the Colony on the grounds that it would be fatal to birds, and that wholesale slanghter of rabbits is inimical to the health of human beings. The Society state they have taken the opinions of several medical gentlemen on the question, and they say there is reason to fear an outbreak of pestilence from putrefying rabbits killed by oholera. Brisbane, June .6. Mr Abraham Street, confidential clerk to Messrs Barnett and Co.'s well known drapery firm, who was arrested for embezzlement, has been sentenced to ten years's imprisonment. Dr Black of Dunedin has accepted the Presidency of the Chemistry and Mineralogy section of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. It is announced that- the Government will appeal to the Privy Council against the decision of the Supreme Court in ordering the classification of pupil teachers of the State schools under Class 5 The case involves a large sum, as every pupil teaoher would under the order of the Court, be entitled to similar rank and salary as those previously classified under Class 5. The soheme of military defence, about to be submitted to Parliament includes such a complete system of submarine defence that it is believed it will be absolutely impossible for hostile vessels to gain entrance to the harbor.
