TOWN EDITION. Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1387.

We are glad to learn that the reported resignation of the portfolio of Mines by the Hon Mr Larnach is a mistake, and that it is only the control of the comparatively unimportant Marine Department which he has resigned. This correction of the error will, we feel sure, give great satisfaction, as Mr Larnach has proved himself an excellent and thoroughly popular Minister of Mines. A recent Dunedin telegram Bays that Sir Julius Vogel denies the truth of the rumors that he has been offered the head of the Government Insurance, or that th« Con-troller-Ganeralhas been asked to resign in his favour. Ho states that wl.en Mr Allen came out- in opposition to Sir Roterfc Stout ho offered lo place his resignation in the Premier's hand, but the latter declined it. This is but another instance of the loyalty which has r.lwsys marked the denlings of Sir Julius with his colleagues. The offer to Sir Bobert Stout to take himself out o£ the way if his presence in the Ministry was likely to iojuriously affeco the Premier's chance of re-election was a graceful act that cannot but be highly appreciated by Sir Robert Stout, and by the people of ISew Zealand, who never fail to admire unselfish? ness and loyalty in their leading men. The distribution of prizes to the children attending the Presbyterian Sunday School took place yesterday afternoon, whoa no less than eighty prizes were presented by the Bey P. Calder, who congratulated teachers and pupils alike upon the very satisfactory etato of fcbe school, and expressed th« great pleasure he derived from the fact that plenty of teachers were found willing to undertake the important work. An attractive concert is to be given in. the All Saints schoolroom this evening, in which several members of the choir, under th# conductorship of Mr Akers, will take par-t. ThjQ pioceeds will be devoted to the Church funds. A Y287 unpleasant accent happened at the cemetery yesterday afternoon to Mrs Sunley, who was driving up the bill in her pony carriage, when a portion of the harness gave way, and the carriage ran back over the bank and was upset, and Mrs Sunley of course was thrown out, though fortunately she was not much hurt. Damages were soon repaired and Mrs Sunley was able to drive home in her carriage. Several letters from correspondents are held over until to morrow. The Otego Dcf,ily 2fr«« states that Sir Julius Vogel has receiyed & cablegram from London explaining the meaning' of the telegram received by Mr Alan Scott that the new contract for the Midland Railway is settled. The meaning, it now appears, is that the Midland Railway Company have framed their amendments on the contract, and ]bhat a copy of this draft is coming out to th,e colony by the San Francisco mail. A Deaughts match was played at the Turf Hotel, at Stoke, on Friday night, between the Star and the local Club, resulting in an easy victory for the former, who won fourteen games to their opponents six.
