TOWN EDITION. Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 1887.

A more delightful day for a holiday than yesterday proved could not possibly be deBired, and the result was that everybody wbo could get out of town iuto the country did so. Tho railway did a fine busiuess, au unusually long traiu which started uc 10 o'clock being crammed, carriage afier carriage aod i ruck afur truck having to be put on io satisfy the requirements of those who flocked to the station at the time appointed. The railway officials were however, equal to the occasion, and by their courtesy aod readiness to clo all in their power to accommodate the unusually large number of excursionists, all tbe passengera were stowed away and the train witb some 600 people on board got away a very few minutes after the advertised time. The principal attraction was tbe woods aDd fern gullies at Belgrove, whioh, judging by the appearance of the returning excursionists in the evening, must hare been despoiled of much of their contents. A good number mado Brightwater their halting place, and spent the day on the cricket ground. The Rocks and Sands wero, as usual, a favorite resort for family parties, while some availed themselves of the excursion trip to Motueka by the steamer Waitapu. A large numbfer of visitors arrived from Wellington and Marlborough on JFriday morning, and theße returned by the Penguin at 10 o'clock lass night, after having thoroughly enjoyed their holiday, during the whole of which the weather was simply lovely. We call attention to a letter which appears elsewhere from the Bishop of Nelson, who has taken an immense deal of pains to bring together the colleotion of pictures now on view in the Bishop's sohoolroom, and is desirous of inducing the working men of the town to pay it a visit. A PIKE cccurrud lvsfc night at Stafford Place, Mr O'Connor's farm at Woiinea West, by which the stabies, barn, ani fowl house together with a small quantity of grain, and a chaffcutter were destroyed. All the family werri absent at ihe time exco[>o and Mrs O'Connor, and uu thing could bo done to stop tbt> progress of the flumes, but fortunately they did not reach tbe hous-', Tbere was no insurance on the property destroyed. . _ The -anniversary of the Nelson School Society will be celebrated tbis rveniug by a tea and public meeting in the schoolroom, at the lutter of which the ch-iir will be taken by the R?v L. Moore at 7 o'clock. MAjOR-GBNBEAIi Sir George Whitmore accompanied the Volunteers ia the Hinemoa this morning, aud proceeded by tho s»jQae steam-: r to Wellington. Telegrams, &^., will t>o found on the fourth page. We have to Acknowledge tbe reoeipt of £2 from Mrs Gl isgow for tho widow of the late John McCormack.
