Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 2, 1885.
The debate on the no-confidence motion was continued last night, *heu nme mem- | hers contributed their quota to Hansard, everyone of them finding fault with the j •'objectionable proposals" of the Government, though most of them appear to have thought, with Mr Fisher, that they would like to keep the Government in bat their policy out. Whose policy the Government arc supposed to adopt in the event of tbeir being allowed to retain their seats on condition that they do not insist upon their own being carried out has not y»t been stated. It is a remarkable state of affairs certainly, but the New Zealand public ore becoming so thoroughly accustomed to queer situations in connection with the Legislature and Government of the colony that a session wauld be thought a strange one indeed that passed by without some peculiarities in the relations between Ministers aud the Hou*e of Representatives. There seems to be little or no doubt a> to the issue of Sir Gtorge Grey's motion, the division on which will be no indication of tho strength of ponies, as it seems probable that a large proportion of tho members will decline to vote. This being the case, the sooner the bell rings the bolter, as the whole of the ground is sure to be gone over again in the disouesion of the Ministerial proposals. Seeing that the chess match played Borne few weeks back was limned both as to time and as to the number of players on either uide, what may be fairly called the first match of the season will be played botwean the Towu aud Country Ohfss Clubs ab Dr Satchell'a he use. In a humorous advertisement which appears elsewhere " Jacob Faithful " announces the result of his recent consultation on the Hawke's Bay steeplechase, which was a complete success, no less than 4059 tickets having been disposed of, or 60 over the required number as stated in the original programme, which were added to the sweep in the shape of £5 prizes. The first prize, £450, was secured by a dark in a lawyer's office in Napier ; the second, £325, was pocketed by a billiard marker in Taranaki ; and the third, £112 10s, by a gentleman holding office in the Dunedin Jockey Club, the balance being pretty evenly distributed over the colony. On Saturday next Messrs Sharp and Sons will sell by auction the property in Washington Valley lately occupied by Mr C. Bartlatt.
