Auckland, Wednesday. Charges of being absent without leave against 54 seamen on strike were withdrawn to-day by the Northern Steamship Company. The inducement was a cheque for £100 paid to the company by the treasurer of the Seamen's Union in recompense for any loss caused by the strike. A charge against six seaman from the Thomas Jinssell was adjourned till November 3. Thursday. At a meeting of the Seamen's Union yesterday the Chairman exhorted all to further the | interests of shipowners. Three cheers were ! given when it was announced that the Northern S.S. Co. did not intend to press ' the charges against the men who had been arrested. Wellington, Thursday. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received a cable announcing that their new : steamer Kaikonra, left Plymouth at S a.m. on V the 28th inst. for Wellington. ] Dunedin*, Thursday 1 Arrived— Steamer Victory, Captain Eis coate, from London. D. P. Edwards A. B. e fell overboard on the 23rd. The passengers are all well. s The horse "Captain Webster" has split, s his hoof and is unlikely to bo a starter for y the New Zealand Cup.
