Harlcy, Stringer, 80l- ! ton, Crewdson, Rowell, and Levien. j A letter was received from Mr J. A. Packer calling attention to the state of the footpath in front of his shop in Hardy-street. ResoVed, That the footpath be gravelled at once. A letter was received from Judge Broad stating that there was a public road on the hill at the back of his property and that he was willing to clear it of the gorae which was thickly growing on it now, and to keep it clear on condition that he was allowed to fence and use it, of course upon the understanding that he was to give it up at any ] time on being requested to do so by the j Council.— Cr Rowell moved, and Or Bolton seconded, that Judge Broad's offer be accepted, subject to any rights that might be exercised over it by any other individual. A letter was received from Warner. Clarkson and Co, stating that they accidentally omilted to pay their gas account for last month on the due date but, sent in their cheque before 9 o'clock on the following morning, when it was refused. It was a pure inadvertence, and they asked that the discount be allowed.— Cr J. Harley proposed that the request be granted.— Crs Levien, Stallard, and Moorhouse opposed. . A date was fixed, and if they once allowed that to be exceeded there was no knowing- what it might lead to. — A division was taken with the following result :— Ayes : Crs Little, Harley, Swinger, and Bolton. Noea : Crs Stallard, Trask, Moorhouse, Crewdson, Rowell, Levien, and the Mayor. A letter from Messrs Peart Brothers asking that the approach from Gloucester-street to their mill might be made up. Referred to Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr George Harper asking permission to remove soil from the upper end of Hardyrstreet on condition that he filled up the hollow with gravel — Request granted pn condition that the work be done to the satisfaction of the Surveyor. Permission was granted to Mr T. Field to construct a drain from the house occupied by Madame Snmmerhayes afc the corner of Nile and Colling wpod street with the main sewer. A memorial was received from residents at the.Porfr calling attention to the nuisance created by the tramway, running so close , to the houses between Mr Lukiu's, and:,. Mr Akersten's, and asking that it might be removed to the opposite side of theroTad.— G'r Trask moved that the matter be referred to the Works Committee.— Cr Levien; ; hoped the Committee would thoroughly examine the place, as there was no room for the tramway on the opposite side. He beijeved that the only nuisance caused was the splashingof the windows by the 'bus horse,— Cr Rowell said every Councillor was acquainted with the Bpotj and he did not seethe use of referring it to the Committee.— Cr Moorhouse moved that the Council's solicitor be consulted as to whether the Council had power to acb in the matter.— The Maypr thought it might be better to refer it to the Committee. At present he did not fell sure whether it was better to move it or not.— Referred to the Works Committee. The following letter, was received from the " £6. the Cemetery Trustees:— .' The Mayor thought Jhat the Council ought to appoint a Cemetery Committee who should attend to the Cemetery, and make enquiries as to the other cemeteries in the town.— Cr Trask thought the suggestion an excellent one, and thought; there should be one member from each ward.— The following ■were appointed a Committee: -The Mayor. Crs T. Harley, Bunny, Bolton, and Levien.— Cr Rowell thought that the sexton, being : * paid servant of the Council, should be kept employed, and that he should be placed '. under the Surveyor's orders.— Agreed to. The report of the Works Committee was ' read as follows:— (1) That the footway in Examiner-street, from the Golden Fleece to , Bronti-street be gravelled; (2) Thafc the , Com mi tie are unable to recommend any 1 work in Alfred - street ; (3) - That the footway on tho sonth ■■ side of Glpuces-: ; ter-streefc be formed and' kerbed : from : tHe Postboy to the Railway station The Mayor said that the- eosfc of the path ; near the Golden Fleece Hotel would be £45. ' Resolved, thab the work be done.— With regard to clause. 2> the Mayor said that the •treet wag certainly in & very bad condition, bufc it did not appear to be one that was much used and theraupon the Committee made their recommendatiea. — Cr Stringer moved that the ruts be filled up.— Cr Rowell said it would be an utter waste of money to do anything to the street.— Cr : Bolton thought something oujjhb to be done. ! There was stone chert and it would no% cost > above £5 to remedy the dangerous places.— ! Cr Stritiger's resolution was then puit nh&i .... ( |

losb. Ayes 6 ; Noes 5.- Clause 3 of the report was then adopted. [ The report of the Gas and Waterworks Committee was then rsad as follows :— (1) As to a letter from Messrs Moss Davis aiad others, that they recommend that a lamp 'be erected inShelbourne-stryeb at the top of the hill near Mr \soss Davis' ; (2) That- they recommend thac four new purifiers, each' 8 feet sqnare, ■with necessary eonnecions. be ordertd from Home ; (;>) That a pipo screwing machine he purchased ; (4) 'The Committee, taking into consideration thas the Gasworks have been greatly, exfceudbd during tho past year or two, thereby eritailijig a large amount of extra work on the Ci,ty Surveyor, that the duties in connection Avilh the management of the Gasworks have be6n very efficiently and. satisfactorily performed by him, and that this department is being worked at a : profit, recommend that $n \ extra £50 per annum be allowed to the I City Surveyor as manager of the Gasworks, and charged against that department ' ' Cr Moorhou»e and Cr Tr'ask' moved an>l seconded the 'adoption of the first clause of the report.— Cr Rowell was dead square against the erection of this lamp which wjas not at all necessary. There were hundreds of places in the town where they were more wanted. If this was agreed to he should. ' recommend a petition being got up by the i fishermeu to erect a lamp at the short cut j through the Boulder Bank. — Cr Stringer j spoke in favor of she lamp.— The clause was i adopted, Crs Stallarcl, Crewds'on, and Rowell j voting- against it. —Clauses 2 and 3 we're J then, adopted. . - . ' Clause -1 was then moved by Cr Trask who said 'that the Committee had, had this matter under consideration for some* time. Tb\e work and responsibility were' increasing aijdj the gasworks were paying handsomely. Tak-j ing everything, into consideration they : . did. not consider the Surveyor was sufficiently, paid at £300 a year as he had to keep a horse. Taking one day, the 9th June, he had calcuj- ' atad the amount of gas made from 1 880 to 1.8-Sp, and it had increased steadily year by year from 32,480 to 57,570 feet. The profit on the gas- ' works for last year was £950.— Cr Rowejll. seconded. He thought, the Surveyor" was . about the worst paid servant the Council tad. If they were to lose'Mr Lightfpot's services tliey would not replace him as 'manager of tlje gasworks alone for the total salary he. now received. He was a thoroughly good ail rotirid man, and was master of his work. His services as Captain of the. Fire Brigade too were, he thought, well worthy of conside rr4tion. — The Mayor said the report was a surprise to him,' but he had very great pleasure in supportingit. It was false economy tbpay thii Bervants too low. The SursteyoV was always at work and 1 did his work well.
